Betsy Coker Thrash

Betsy Coker Thrash passed away peacefully at her home in Charleston, SC on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born and raised in Columbia, SC, Betsy was the daughter of the late Benjamin Covington Coker and Katherine White Coker. She graduated from Dreher High School in 1953 and received her B.A. from Duke University in 1957. Following graduation, she married William “Rosser” Thrash and settled in Columbia to start their family. In 1967, the family moved to Summerville, where they continued raising their four children and became active members of Bethany United Methodist Church. There, they built a life centered on family, faith and lifelong friendships. Over the years, she taught middle and high school math, then worked in several roles in the family business, T&T Sports of Charleston.

Later in life, Betsy and Rosser divided their time between Summerville and Edisto Beach, where they became active members of The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, enjoying many dear and lasting friendships there as well.

Betsy found great joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life-being a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a loyal friend and a faithful member of her churches. She was talented at sewing, cross-stitching, painting with watercolors and various arts and crafts. She enjoyed playing bridge and cards, as well as cooking Southern-style meals. She cherished time spent at the beach collecting shells and especially had a sharp eye for finding shark’s teeth. She also loved fishing for spot-tail bass and had an uncanny knack for it, almost always out-catching Rosser, much to his chagrin. She had a passion for shopping and never passed up a chance for a good bargain, especially at her beloved long-time favorite, TJ Maxx!

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Charmaine Summers, whose tireless devotion and loving care brought Betsy and Rosser immense comfort over the past 13 years. Her kindness, dedication, and humor were a true gift; she will be cherished forever.

Betsy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rosser Thrash, and her sister, Jane Coker Dunbar. She is survived by her children: Bill Thrash (Ann), Ben Thrash (Tracy), Kit Thrash and Mari Thrash Wood (Chip); her five grandchildren: Jackson Wood, Davis Wood, Regan Thrash Weathersby (Justin), Cole Westmoreland and Riley Kate Westmoreland; and one great-grandchild: Willow Weathersby.

A private family service and burial will be held to honor Betsy’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Thrash Family Endowed Scholarship with Charleston Southern University online at: https://www.charlestonsouthern.edu/advancement/ways-to-give/online-giving/ or by check to Charleston Southern University with attention to Advancement, 9200 University Blvd., Charleston, SC 29406.
