Bernice Berlin Silver

Bernice Berlin Silver, 96, of Charleston, SC, widow of Sam Silver, died December 19, 2010 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  Mrs. Silver was born in Charleston, SC March 2, 1914 the first daughter of the late Sam and Bertie (Livingstain) Berlin. She graduated from Memminger High School in 1933 where she was the Valedictorian of her class and editor of the school yearbook. She attended the College of Charleston and then married Sam Silver of Augusta, Georgia where she lived for the next 25 years. Mrs. Silver had five children in Augusta and was very active in the Jewish community there. She served as President of Hadassah and President of the Sisterhood of Adas Yeshuran Synagogue. After short stays in Columbia, SC and Los Angeles, CA, she and her husband returned to Charleston in 1965. Upon her return, with her husband they started and operated Acme Restaurant Supply until her husband's death in 1988 and her retirement in 1991. During these years Mrs. Silver was active in the Charleston business community and was recognized in 1974 when she was selected Charleston Business Woman of the Year by the American Business Women's Association.  Mrs. Silver was a member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and spent her later years at The Palms of Mt Pleasant where she was beloved by both fellow residents and the staff.


She was predeceased by a son, Harold; a daughter, Dena; a brother, Alwyn Berlin and a sister, Shirley (Sam) Altman, formally of Brunswick, GA.


Surviving is a daughter, Nancy (Don) Barry of Concord, MA; two sons, Herbert (Temma) Silver of Greenville, SC and Gerald Silver of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a brother, Henry (Terry) Berlin; sister-in-law, Shera Lee Berlin, all of Charleston; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. 


Funeral services will be 2 pm at the graveside Tuesday, December 21, 2010 in Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, GA.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Lutheran Hospice, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Ste. 46, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, 182 Rutledge Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403.
