Bernice Inez Greenleaf Hills, 80, of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, widow of Marion Edward Hills, and wife of Herman Waring Hills, entered into eternal rest Friday, February 19, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 300 Palm Boulevard, Isle of Palms, at 11:00 am, followed by Interment in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Bernice was born April 25, 1935 in Bucksport, SC, daughter of the late Jay Gould Greenleaf and Bernice Spencer Greenleaf. She grew up in Georgetown and was a 1955graduate of Winyah H.S. and worked as a cosmetologist for Agnes Thames prior to becoming a full time mother. She was a member St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, sang in the choir, was a member of WELCA and a member of the Women's Shrimper's Association. Bernice enjoyed music, dancing, good conversation and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Hills Avinger and her husband Jimmy of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her son, Marion Greenleaf Hills and his wife Teresa, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her brothers, Jay Gould Greenleaf, Jr. and his wife Kathy of August, GA; and Harry Edloe Greenleaf and his wife Shirley of Florence, SC; her grandchildren, James Waring Avinger and Blake Spencer Avinger; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Mark Edward Hills and her sisters Anne Spencer Greenleaf Holland and Virginia Greenleaf Paschal.
