Bernardine Plourde, known affectionately as Bernie, passed away on July 25, 2024, in Charleston, SC, at the age of 89. Born on September 24, 1934, in Sullivan County, Missouri, Bernie was a cherished member of the community and a beacon of kindness and loyalty to all who knew her.
Bernie dedicated 57 years to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, where she was a devoted member. Her career spanned several years at GMAC until her retirement. Bernie's mornings were joyously spent at the Bear E. Patch café with close friends, earning her the loving title of the Mayor of the Bear E. Patch. Her life was a testament to the love she had for her family and friends, surrounding herself with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends during her final days.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, James and Jennifer Plourde, Laura and Jeff Akers, and Susan and Mike Podiak; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews Alona, JB, and Sarah Alexander, John and Linda Whidden, and Judy and John Rand. Bernie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Nelson R. Plourde, her parents Ola Bernard and Velma Yardley Franklin, her sister Valeta Alexander, brother-in-law Glen Alexander, her nephew Keith Alexander, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Eva and Jim Whidden.
Bernie's life will be celebrated and remembered in a service held Tuesday, July 30, 2024 in The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends in the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel, located at 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, SC, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive, Charleston, SC, 29407. Bernie’s legacy of love, loyalty, and community involvement will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
