Bernard Martin Schapiro

Bernard Schapiro passed away peacefully at his home in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday, November 13, 2016. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2016, in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Bernard was born in Bronx, New York on January 9, 1929, the second son of Mary and Joseph Schapiro. He graduated from Asbury High School and Rutgers University. He served in the US Army, in the 1st Cavalry in Japan, during the post-war US occupation. After many years in the packaging and advertising industry in New York, he moved to London where he introduced the chocolate chip cookie to England through his company, Millie's Cookies, in 1987. After retirement, he moved back to the United States, via East Hampton and Florida and eventually settling in Charleston, SC.

Always an active sportsman, Bernard played football in college. He was an accomplished tennis player, golfer, pilot and sailor, specializing in ocean racing in the past few years, notably the Charleston to Bermuda Yacht Race in 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Schapiro of Chichester, West Sussex, UK; his son, Jeff, and grandson, Felix, of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Susan Pinto, of West Milford, CT; and grandchildren, Mariel Pinto of Portland, Oregon and Jeremy Pinto of New Jersey.

Bernard was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
