Benson Leroy Mims, 84, of Charleston, SC, husband of Evelyn Jeanette McGee Mims, entered into eternal rest Thursday, February 6, 2014. His funeral service with military honors will be Monday, February 10, 2014, at 2:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. The family will receive friends Sunday, February, 9, 2014, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.
Benson was born February 19, 1929 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Benson Lewis Mims and Oceola Burbage Mims. He was a retired firefighter with the City of Charleston. He was formerly employed by Ray Wattes Automotive and also Sears and Roebuck. He was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Evelyn Jeanette Mims; three daughters, Kathleen Jean Mims of Ladson SC, Brenda Lee Calles and Sharon Renee Pierce, both of Charleston, SC; sister, Annette Hinerman of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren, Veronica Lynn Wright (Brad)of GA, Adrienne Nicole Arndt ,Captain Jeffrey Thomas Pierce, Jr. and Amanda Claire Ray, all of Charleston, SC; and three great-grandchildren, Nicole Wright, Gabrielle Wright and Jacob Wright.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fort Johnson Baptist Church, 1473 Camp Road, James Island, SC 29412 and/or Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412 and/or Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.
