Benjamin Harvey Dorman, 65, of Charleston, SC passed away on Wednesday June 17, 2015 after a long illness.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Shelba Smith Dorman; son J. Matthew Dorman (Mimi); daughter Erin Dorman Whittle (Allen); four grandchildren: Hana Dorman; Max Dorman; Bella Whittle; Isla Whittle. Two step-children, Angela Black Drake (Lucas) and Todd Clifford Black (Olga). Also surviving are his brothers, Paul Dorman (Lydia) of Greer, George Dorman (Brenda) of LaGrange, GA and a sister Dianne Dorman Williamson (Dan) of Greer. Ben was son of Paul M. and Lily Mae Dorman.
Ben was a graduate of Gardner Webb University. His distinguished South Carolina Public School teaching and coaching career began in Gaffney. He taught and coached at Broome High School, Woodruff High School and Ford Elementary School. He coached students in Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Golf at the Varsity, Junior Varsity and grade school level.
Ben retired from Laurens School District 55 in 2004. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards for his teaching and coaching. However, he highlights his most successful achievements being that of watching his students and athletes transition successfully into adulthood. During his lifetime, Ben was an avid golfer and sportsman. He enjoyed all sports and especially his beloved Clemson Tigers.
Ben grew up in Fairforest, SC where he still has many friends and associates. He and his wife moved to Charleston, SC after retirement. As members of Providence Baptist Church on Daniel Island, Ben served as a Deacon and participated in many other committees in support of his Church.
Services are being held at 4 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church on Sunday, June 21, 2015. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
