Barbara Anne Stephens passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on April 15, 2024 in Charleston, SC surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on November 10, 1931 in Rome Georgia, and was raised in Winter Haven, Florida. She moved to Charleston in the 1950's where she lived until moving to NC in 2007.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents Jennie Lee Barber Stephens and Milas Oliver Stephens, two sisters, Dorothy S Dawson and Bettye S Hieber, and a daughter, Peggy Graham Sanderson. Surviving are one child, Stephanie A. Kramer (Edward Kramer) of Charleston, SC, four grandchildren, Christina Ashley Schaefer and Franklin Andrew Schaefer of Charleston, SC, Stephen Mark Dugan of NC, and Denise Allison Dugan of Va., and one great grandchild, Mikayla Schaefer Walston of Charleston SC.
Barbara enjoyed gardening and served as President of the Fort Johnson Estates Garden Club in Charleston, SC in the 1960's. She served as a brownie and Girl Scout leader and was a hospice volunteer. She also worked as a volunteer at Roper hospital in Charleston, SC for 10 years and served as secretary and treasurer of the auxiliary. She was a member of the Eastern Star where she served as Marshall and was also a docent for the Historic Charleston Foundation. Barbara was an avid bridge player and enjoyed the company of her many bridge friends.
Barbara retired from St Matthews Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC in 1994 where she was employed as the financial secretary. She then worked at the Gift box in the Mills House Hotel for 10 years in Charleston, SC before moving to NC where she worked in the gift shop at the hospital in Monroe, NC for 10 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to
the Kidney Foundation in Barbara's honor or
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of her daughter Peggy.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, held at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, at 10:00 am. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
