Barbara Steinberg Spitz

Barbara Steinberg Spitz, of Charleston, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on April 11th. Funeral service will be held graveside at Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville). Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL

Born October 30, 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina to Florence and Irving Steinberg. She grew up near Hampton Park with her older sister JoAnn Morros. She was the first confirmant of Synagogue Emanu-el and in the last graduating class of Memminger High School. She attended University of Georgia and the University of Miami where she met Hugo Spitz whom she married in June of 1952. They moved to South Windemere where they raised their three children and remained happily married for 67 years until his passing.

Barbara, known to most as Bobbi, was very active in her community. She served on the Hollings Cancer Advisory Board of MUSC, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Board and others. She also served as President of the Charleston chapter of Hadassah, co-president of Synagogue Emanu-el Sisterhood, President of Women's Division of Jewish Federation and co-president of the Charleston Jewish Federation. She was also instrumental in helping to bring Kids Fair to Charleston.

She parlayed her artistic flair and many interests into successful businesses. She opened Rose Ross, a very hip cosmetic shop, with her sister JoAnn on Broad Street. Bobbi always wanted to help people look their best! She went on to open Bits of Lace with Margaret Bobo, an exclusive lingerie and gift shop on Vendue Range.

After retiring from Bits of Lace, she learned to bead and founded Adornments by Bobbi, creating one of a kind jewelry pieces, which were featured in Saks Fifth Avenue, Gwynns and the Charleston Boutique. Mom was never one to sit still! Later in life, she learned to play Canasta, Mahjongg and started painting - a life-long ambition.

She was a kind and giving person who took wonderful care of her Mother, Husband, family and many others. She cherished her life long friendships along with her new ones. She will live on in our hearts forever.

She is survived by Jack Spitz, Jill Spitz Levy (Marc), Sally Spitz Vinikoff (Ken) four loving granddaughters; Cara, Julia, Cara, Rachel and great granddaughters Stella and Zoe. She was predeceased by her husband Hugo M. Spitz, sister JoAnn Morros and lifelong friend Louise Gilmore. Special thanks to her caretaker and friend, Ebony Jackson.

It would make her very happy if you would make a donation to your favorite nonprofit in her memory.

Condolence calls will be held at her residence Tuesday April 16th and Wednesday April 17th from 2-5pm and 7-9pm.
