Barbara Jean English, lovingly known as BJ, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2023, at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC. She was 66 years old. Born on July 1, 1956, in Smoak’s, SC, Barbara was the cherished daughter of the late Floyd Black and Helen Black.
After completing her education at Bells High School, Barbara pursued her passion for cosmetology and obtained her license. In 1975, she crossed paths with the love of her life, Amery English, whom remained her devoted husband and best friend. Together, they raised their beloved son, Amery Steven English, Jr. of Ravenel.
Barbara's life revolved around being a devoted wife and mother. Her pride in her husband and son knew no bounds, and she made sure they always felt her unwavering support. Her love extended beyond her family to animals, particularly her cherished Maltese, named “Trooper”. Barbara possessed an innate talent for decorating, homemaking, and an extensive knowledge of flowers. Her flair for Charleston chic and Southern charm was truly unmatched. With an open heart and a humble demeanor, she warmly embraced everyone she encountered, always willing to lend a helping hand. Barbara was a loyal friend, quick-witted, and possessed a contagious laughter that brightened the lives of those around her. She derived great joy from assisting the less fortunate, living her life with a generous spirit.
Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 47 years, Amery English; her beloved son, Steven English, and daughter-in-law, Chrissy English, of Ravenel; her sister, Ann Riddle (Tony), of Pelzer; her niece, Jodi Fowler (Eric), of Pelzer; Treva Williamson (Steve) of Kenansville, NC; April Sullivan (Bobby) of Raleigh, NC; and Christi George of Morgantown, WV. She is also survived by her nephews, Greg Pellum of Pelzer, Jeffrey Pope (Laura) of Raleigh, NC, and Jerry Pope of Wilmington, NC. As well as her numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Helen Black.
The family would like to extend their love and gratitude to Jackie Shaw (Caregiver) as well as DaySpring Assisted Living (Mona Wright).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Barbara's honor to the Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary, located at 5604 New Road, Hollywood, SC 29449. Please include a note mentioning her name. www.halliehill.com/donate
