Barbara Jean Hayes

Barbara Evans Hayes, 79, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of James Martin Hayes, Jr., M.D., entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 8, 2018. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 12, 2018 in The Church of The Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road at 12:00 p.m. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday in The Church of The Nativity Catholic Church from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.

Barbara was born September 12, 1938 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, daughter of Thomas Hugh Evans and Lucille Pendergrass Evans. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1956 and graduated from Columbia College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960. Barbara and Jim were married June 9, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Georgetown, SC.

Barbara was employed by the Moultrie School District, the Medical College of South Carolina and Associates in Internal Medicine. She was an active member of the Church of the Nativity serving in the Nativity Choir. Barbara was also a member of the Charleston County Medical Society Auxiliary, Columbia College Alumna Association and served as a Red Cross volunteer.

She is survived by her husband, James Martin Hayes, Jr., M.D., of Charleston, SC; brother, Thomas Hugh Evans, Jr. of Bonneau Beach, SC; three children: James Martin Hayes, III and wife Patty of Edisto Island, SC; Amelia "Amy" Lynne Hayes DuPree and husband Keith of James Island, SC; Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Hayes Parsons and husband Terry of James Island, SC; seven grandchildren: James Martin Hayes IV, Mary Kristin West, Lauren Heather Hayes, Samantha Lee Parsons, Sarah Nicole Parsons, Joseph Hayes Hogg and Whit Stephen Hogg.
