Barbara Lee Glass Epstein died peacefully Friday, February 17, 2023 with her youngest son, Mark by her side. She was the daughter of Joseph and Martha Glass and born in Boston, MA on July 12, 1932. She was predeceased by her husband Edwin S. Epstein III, her brother Steven and sister Cheryl.
Barbara spent her childhood in Revere, MA surrounded by a big, boisterous family, before moving to Augusta as a young teenager. It was in Augusta that she met the love of her life, Edwin and they spent 69 wonderful years together. Barbara and Edwin lived in Japan and Guam plus many places in the US and Barbara always embraced the adventure of being a Naval officer’s wife. While raising three young boys and living the nomadic life, Barbara received her degree in Interior Design. She and Edwin both began second careers after Edwin’s retirement from the Navy in 1972. They spanned from owning Barbara Lee Crafts, a small shop located on the corner of Camp and Folly, to fulfilling her lifelong desire as a professional interior designer and lastly as an office manager of a construction company. During this time, Barbara and Ed built their dream home in Charleston on the water, where each weekend was packed with boating, shrimping and swimming. Barbara and Edwin both retired again in 2012 and began traveling the world over, visiting numerous exotic locations. They had stamps on their passports for each continent, less Antarctica, and traveled the US extensively.
In addition to being an active member of the Naval Officer Wives, Barbara was a member of Zonta International, a group of professional female entrepreneurs. She and Edwin were also members of KKBE Synagogue.
Barbara’s family was her pride and joy. She and Edwin were always the first to show up for family gatherings and the last to leave. There was not a single family birthday or anniversary that went by without a card, gift and an “I love you more.” Barbara never shied away from sharing her love of life with family and friends and her daily presence will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her sons: Murry (Maggie), David (Susan), and Mark along with her six grandchildren Rebecca, Allison Moore, Daniel, Jason, Robert and Rachel Neal and ten great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, Feb. 28, 10 AM at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort SC. There will be a gathering for family and friends beginning at 2 PM at the home of David and Susan Epstein, 1299 Old Towne Road, Charleston SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Barbara’s memory to St. Jude Hospital online https://www.stjude.org or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.
