Barbara Lee Baumgartner Brewer, 67, of Charleston, SC, wife of Thomas Edward Brewer M.D., entered into eternal rest Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at her residence. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 13, at 11:00 a.m. in First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, followed by a reception in Molly Weir Hall. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Barbara was born July 19, 1947 in Kansas City, MO, to the late John Franklin Baumgartner and Ada Fuller Baumgartner. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS in Food Science and Nutrition and a MS in Health Service Administration. Barbara was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, a member of Pi Beta Phi and a member of the University of Kansas Alumnae Association. She was also a member of the Charleston Artist Guild and a member of the Charleston Horticulture Society. Barbara enjoyed volunteering throughout her life at children's schools, Cub Scouts, with her Pi Phi alum group, as a board member of the Single Parent Scholarship Foundation of Arkansas, and with the Women's Golf Association of the Country Club of Charleston. Her true love of volunteering, however, came with her 20 years of volunteering for the United States Tennis Association at the state, sectional and national levels. She served as President of the USTA Arkansas and the USTA Southern Section as well as the captain of her dear 4.0 Senior Maybank team. Barbara's hobbies included traveling, culinary arts, gardening and oil painting.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Brewer, M.D. of Charleston, SC; sons, Dr. Matthew J. Brown (Kathy) of Linwood, KS, Patrick M. Brown (Caroline) of Charleston, SC and Michael A. Brewer (Shannon) of Alexandria, LA; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Lynn Henry of Tuscaloosa, AL; and her uncle, Paul Baumgartner of Colorado Springs, CO. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
