Barbara F. Backer, 84, entered into eternal rest on September 4, 2026. Her graveside service will be held on Monday, September 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville), 60 Sycamore Avenue, Charleston, SC. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Born in Asheville, NC, she was the daughter of Ruth Johnston Feldman and Dr. Leon H. Feldman. She was married for 65 years to the love of her life, Don Backer. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons Stuart (Dina) and Sam (Susan), grandchildren Eric (Olivia), Sydney Backer Hirsch (Spencer), Molly Backer, and Ezra Backer, and greatgrandchildren Mina Jane Backer and Sophie Scott Backer; brother "Buzz" Feldman; and Nephew Barry Friedman. She was a preschool teacher for more than 20 years and wrote books and magazine articles for preschool teachers and parents of preschool-age children. She also wrote recipes, puzzles and games for Highlights For Children.

She was a member of Synagogue Emanu-El, Sisterhood of Synagogue Emanu-El, The Ladies Chevrah Kadisha of Charleston, Hadassah, NAEYC, and SCAEYC.
