Bachman Shirer Smith III, 72, a lifelong resident of Charleston, died Thursday February 3, 2017, of complications from Parkinson's Disease. Bachman was the son of the late Dr. Bachman S. Smith, Jr. and Eunice Green Smith. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Bell Smith; sons, Bachman S. Smith IV (Kathryn), and Legare B. Smith (Kate); daughter, Merritt S. Kellett (Wim); grandchildren: McGregor W. Kellett, Hoke G. Kellett, Seabrook W. Kellett, Clayson M. Smith, Cecilia C. Smith, and Bachman S. Smith V; sisters, Margaret S. Garbe (Richard), and Eunice S. Logan (Wade); and brother, Walter G. Smith (Callie).
Bachman was born October 10, 1944. He graduated from High School of Charleston, The University of South Carolina, and The University of South Carolina School of Law. He practiced law in the firms of Brockinton, Brockinton and Smith and Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, where he served as managing partner.
Bachman's sense of civic responsibility knew no bounds and started with his dedication to his church. He was a lifelong member of Grace Church Cathedral, where he served as Senior Warden under 3 rectors, Master of Acolytes, and Church Chancellor. He served as chairman of the City of Charleston Zoning Board of Adjustment, Charleston Election Commission, and Sullivan's Island Board of Zoning Appeals. He was former president of the following organizations: Historic Charleston Foundation, York Place (Episcopal Home for Children), the Rotary Club of Charleston, the New England Society, Charleston Lawyers Club, Board of Trustees of Charleston Day School, and Steward of the South Carolina Society. He also served on the boards of The Community Foundation, The University of the South (Sewanee), Ashley Hall, and Youth Service Charleston. He was a member of Twin Fin, the Howard Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, the Agricultural Society of S.C. and the Carolina Yacht Club.
Bachman was an avid golfer, enjoying years of playing at the Country Club of Charleston, Biltmore Forest Country Club and Yeamans Hall Club.
Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at Grace Church Cathedral on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. and to visit with the family at a reception following the service in Hanahan Hall. (Bow ties are appropriate) Friends and family may visit at the home, 78 Secession St., Mt. Pleasant from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2017. Arrangements by J.
