Asbury P. "Bubba" Presnell, Jr., 88, of James Island, SC, passed away quietly and peacefully on the morning of Saturday, March 7, 2015. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 12, 2015, in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 13, 2015, in the James Island Baptist Church, 2023 Wappoo Drive at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Bubba was born in Asheville, NC on July 22, 1926, to Ada Evans Presnell and Asbury P. Presnell, Sr. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Navy aboard the USS Abercrombie DE 343. After retiring from the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1980, he became very active in DESA (Destroyer Escort Sailors Association) and for a time was Curator of the DESA Museum aboard the USS Laffey at Patriots Point. Bubba was a member of James Island Baptist Church. Until his health declined, he enjoyed being a part of the "Kitchen Crew" at the church where his "Specialty" was making and serving ice tea with a smile and a kiss to the ladies.
He is survived by his sons, Keith W. Presnell (Patty) and Kenneth D. Presnell, all of James Island, SC; daughter, Darlyn P. Johnston (Paul) also of James Island, SC; brother, Patrick Presnell (Theresa) of West Ashley; eight grandchildren, Christie Clerc, Vikki Todd, Tricia Hahn, Roger Smith, Deana Perez, Christopher, Nicolas and Benjamin Johnston; eight great-grandchildren, Frank Howell, Blake and Ashley Todd, Laura, Patrick and Jenni Hahn, Carson and Carter Perez. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Laura Jeffcoat Presnell; daughter, Phyllis L. Presnell Smith; brothers, Robert and James Presnell; and sisters, Catherine Hinson, Mary Massalon, Dorothy Parker and Margaret Baggott.
