Asbury Lawton Hudson, born on January 12, 1938, in Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on November 11, 2024. A natural leader and talented athlete, Asbury, known as Bury to family and friends attended Dreher High School, where he led the basketball team to two state championships. During high school, he joined the Marine Reserves, beginning a lifelong connection with the military. He went on to attend the University of South Carolina, majoring in Business and continuing his basketball career at the collegiate level.
After training at Marine Base Quantico, Asbury served at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and later in Okinawa, Japan, where he distinguished himself on the All-Marine Basketball Team. His pride in his service and his commitment to the Marines remained with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Asbury embarked on a successful and fulfilling career at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, North Carolina, ultimately becoming the Vice President of Human Resources. Bury then co-founded Massmark Administrative Services with two life-long friends, a company that continues to thrive today.
Upon his marriage to Lesesne almost 30 years ago, Bury joined the large Deerin family as one of several “outlaws.” He inherited her three sons whom he formed strong bonds with over the years. They and their four kids, who call him “Pops” will remember him as a solid role model and a man of integrity.
Asbury had a deep passion for travel, and he explored all seven continents. And Bury never met a golf game he didn’t enjoy, for the company, not his score! He also loved reading and watching his beloved Gamecocks play both basketball and football. He is remembered by family and friends as a man of character, loyalty, and humor.
Bury is survived by his wife, Lesesne; stepsons Greg Scott (Nicole), Chris Scott (Agapi), and Roth Scott (Blair); and his four grandchildren, Julius Scott, Daisy Scott, Stella Scott, and Fields Scott. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Dick Deerin (Sue); sisters-in-law Connie Deerin and Ginny Deerin; brother-in-law John Deerin (Carole); sister-in-law Liz Hudson; nieces Elizabeth Hudson (Jon) and Lynn Baker (Steve); great-nephew Ryan; and many other nieces and nephews. Bury’s family is grateful for the unfailing support, warmth and love his friends, especially Paul Bolin, showed him until he left us.
Asbury was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Granger, and his twin brother, Walt Hudson and his first wife, Elizabeth Hudson.
A Celebration of Life for Bury will be held on Sunday, December 8, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Daniel Island Club. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toys for Tots, a Marine Corps charity, at 4229 Domino Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405, in Bury’s honor.
A true southern gentleman, when he began to feel the constraints of his illness and comfort became more important than style, Bury asked Lesesne to buy him some “sweat trousers.” At six feet four no easy feat! Those who know and love Bury will appreciate this capitulation on his part.
A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
