Arthur Leighton Shorago

February 28, 1933 — December 23, 2010

Arthur Leighton Shorago, oldest son of Maurice and Florence Shorago passed away December 23, 2010 in the Hospice Center of Mt Pleasant.  His wife of 46 years, Phyllis and daughters Lynn Shorago Hunsinger and Susan Shorago Chase were with their beloved husband and father at the time of his death.

Arthur was born Feb. 28, 1933 in Portland Maine, and graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in business. His professional life was full and varied. He began his career as a loan officer, and spent 20 years in the field, and then worked in sales. Following this, he found his true calling working with special needs children.  He thoroughly enjoyed his work with "his" kids and was always able to put a smile on a child's face and make their day a little brighter.  He was content and fulfilled when working with or spending time with children.

Arthur, affectionately known as Art embraced life and shared his enthusiasm through his telling of his numerous stories and jokes.  He was a devoted father and grandfather swelled with pride when speaking of his daughters and 4 grandchildren and their many achievements.

Arthur is survived by his younger brother George, wife Phyllis, daughter Lynn and Susan, and four grandchildren Rachel, Sam, Hannah and Molly.

Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Emanu-El Cemetery, Maryville, Sunday, December 26th at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, to honor Art and his dedication to special needs children, please make donations to Orange Grove Elementary Charter School where a fund will be set up to support special needs programs.  Donations may be sent to the school address: 1225 Orange Branch Rd. Charleston, SC 29407.
