Arthur Raymond Sellew

Arthur Raymond (Archie) Sellew, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, formerly of Hilton Head Island/Bluffton, SC and Framingham, MA and husband of Nina Ann Scholfield Sellew entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Nina and his son, Wesley, were with him at the end, as they had been throughout his months of recovery and rehabilitation from failing physical abilities related to Parkinson’s Disease and an unsuccessful hip replacement.

Archie was born March 30, 1935, in Framingham, Massachusetts, son of Vincent Sellew and Jenny Brown Sellew. As a young boy he developed lung problems, so his parents sent him to live with his grandparents in the Vermont fresh air, to help clear his lungs and prolong his life. Many years later with a clean bill of health he moved back home to Framingham where he completed school and began his career working as a builder for a large nursing home developer with projects around the northeast. Archie eventually began his own residential building company in Framingham and later on Hilton Head Island. Two of his proudest developments were Doeskin Hill Estates in Framingham, MA and Kidney Island, a small private island with 5 homes overlooking Hilton Head Island, SC.

Though building was his trade, sports were his passion. Archie was an accomplished hockey player. Growing up his friends and Framingham teammates would chant “A speedy man was Arch Sellew when he was on the ice for the White and Blue”. Returning to his Alma Mater as a high school hockey coach, he led his team to a Massachusetts state championship. Archie was a pitcher for his high school baseball team and loved to brag about the times he thew a no hitter and tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals. He later picked up the game of golf and could be found with his regular golf groups on most Saturdays at Framingham Country Club, Long Cove Club (Hilton Head), or Colleton River Plantation (Bluffton). A Boston sports fanatic, Archie was a die-hard Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriot fan and that tradition has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Wesley F Sellew (Susan) of Charleston, Brent W Sellew (Ann) of Charlton, MA, Steven Sellew of Milford, MA, Susan Rice of Franklin, MA; sister, Cynthia LaDue, of Situate, MA; grandchildren, Wesley “Fox” Sellew, Jr and Haile Sellew, both of Charleston, along with many other relatives in Massachusetts.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 19, 2024, in Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street at 2:00 pm.  Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. downtown location. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Archie’s favorite philanthropic organization, the Jimmyfund.org, supporting the fight against cancer at Boston’s Dana-Faber Cancer Institute.
