The Edwards family will receive friends on Sunday, April 27th in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 1:00 p.m until 2:00 p.m.
Arnell was born in Cordesville, SC on July 6, 1921, a daughter of Jake and Maggie Cumbee Wright. "Nell" grew up in the country around Moncks Corner with a large family. Delightfully, there was a little bit of country in everything she said and did. Nell met a handsome and kind U.S. Navy sailor, Henry Eugene Edwards, Sr., and they married. For most of their lives, Arnell and Gene lived next door to her beloved sister and best friend, Bertha, and her husband George Altine. Together, they lived the true meaning of family, walking across the yards each morning for a visit, sharing meals every day, sharing stories and just being country gals living the traditions they loved.
Nell was a devoted wife and mother. She spent most of her time on James Island where she worked for many years in the drug store at the corner of Folly Road and Camp Road. Nell's younger son, Timothy, followed his academic dreams and is currently the Landscape Architect at the State of South Carolina Department of Transportation in Columbia. Arnell was a devoted mother to her two sons. She was also a very involved and loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
Arnell loved her independence. She loved her dog, Spike, and he will miss her. She loved her wood burning stove that she amazingly hauled in the wood to feed for a long time. Arnell liked being at home, and but for a weekly shopping trip out with granddaughter Emily, she was content to do her hobbies around her house and yard. She did very creative embroidery on anything she could get her hands on...mostly handkerchiefs and pillowcases. She enjoyed watching wrestling and game shows. As she wished, Nell lived in her own home until very recently. Arnell was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church.
Arnell is survived by two sons, Henry Eugene Edwards, Jr. of James Island, SC and Timothy Edwards and his wife, Kay, of Columbia, SC; one sister, Janie Wright Sims and husband, Les, of Jackson, SC; one granddaughter, Emily Smith and her husband, Kevin, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two grandsons, Patrick Leamond and Zack Edwards; a great-granddaughter, Harley Ann Smith and a great-grandson, Jonathan Leamond. Also she is survived by her brother-in-law, George Altine of James Island, SC.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Eugene Edwards, Sr., many brothers and sisters, including her dear sister, Bertha.
The family would like to thank visiting angels "Rebecca" and Hospice, especially Penny.
