Arlene Allen Hill

Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Arlene Allen Hill, 85, of Charleston, SC, passed away November 19, 2023. She was born in Laurens, SC to Clarence and Katie Allen. 

Arlene was an avid gardener, reader, and cat lover. She also loved to and was an excellent cook. It was often said by those with whom she shared her recipes, that although they followed her recipes to a ‘T’, the dishes (collards or rutabagas in particular) just were not as good as grandmama’s. She always did her best to make sure that each of everyone’s favorite dish was included on the menu at family gatherings. 

She was stubborn, feisty, and strong but was always willing to help others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. 
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral. She was a longtime volunteer at St. Francis Hospital and at the Tea Room at Old St. Andrews Episcopal Church.  

She is predeceased by her son, Eugene Edison Hill, Jr. and her granddaughter, Kristi Brooke Lowder. She is survived by her children Jerry Allen Hill, Sr. (Mary), Vicki Hill Lowder (Roy), and Kristi Hill Rushing (Chuck). Five grandchildren Jerry Allen Hill Jr., Cassie Arlene Griffin, Katie Samantha Gadsden (Shawn), Dylan Jodi-Eugene Lowder (Analise), Logan Lowder Heath (Mackenzie). Eleven great-grandchildren and an additional one on the way. 

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3673 Maybank Hwy., Johns Island, SC, at 1:00, with reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Old St. Andrews Church, Ashley River Road.
