Aphrodite Stevens Pappas

July 2, 1927 — December 10, 2018

Aphrodite Stevens Pappas, 91, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Anthony N. Pappas, MD entered into eternal rest Monday, December 10, 2018 surrounded by her family. Her Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 13, 2018 in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the church, with a Trisagion Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Aphrodite was born July 2, 1927 in Hempstead, Long Island, daughter of Diamond Stevens and Mary Metousis Stevens Evangelou. She attended Hofstra University on an English and Theater scholarship. Aphrodite served as president of the Student Council and president of the Green Wig Drama Society. Theater and music were her passion and she was the lead in numerous college productions, which led to being scouted by Broadway. She was a member of Alpha Theta Beta Sorority and volunteered in the campus infirmary. Aphrodite was very active in local civic affairs, including the Medical Society Auxiliary, SC Heart Association, Ronald McDonald House, the Clean City Committee of Charleston, and was certified as a Guardian Ad Litem by the University of South Carolina. She taught reading and writing as a Laubach Literacy volunteer. She was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, a lifetime board member of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society, serving as its president from 1955 until 1957. She served as a Vacation Bible School teacher, with the Senior League Ministry, and the women's church choir. She was presented the Archangel Michael Honoree Award by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta for her services to her church and community. She assisted in her husband's medical practice for many years.

Aphrodite met the love of her life, Tony, when she was 16, and they spent 65 loving years together. Our mother was the heart of our family, always gracious, positive and elegant. Her love and gentle spirit were reflected in the way she treated others, and the way she lived her life. She lived by the motto, "if you can't say something nice...". She was truly beautiful inside and out. She was our shining example of gracious living and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her three daughters: Renie P. Forsberg (Eric) of Charleston, SC, Diane P. Ferrara (Bernard) of Mount Pleasant, SC and Margo P. Herbert (Lester) of Greenville, SC; four grandchildren: Anthony E. Forsberg (Rachel), Erin F. Easterling (Donnie), Natalie F. Hurley (Ryan) and Alexandra R. Herbert; four great grandchildren: Gray and Riley Forsberg, Dempsey and Sutton Easterling; her sister-in-law, Olympia P. Clekis of Charleston, SC and many loving nieces and nephews.
