Anthony "Tony" Charles John Ward, 63, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Merellene "Boo" Howell Ward died Wednesday, July 20, 2016. His family will host a Gathering of Friends Saturday, July 23, 2016 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Tony was born and raised in a loving family in rural Missouri. He was the eldest of eight born to Charles Ward and Bernita Boyer Ward. When his father passed unexpectedly, Tony stepped into his father's role, but never his shoes, to his younger siblings. Tony was one of the most enterprising people you would ever meet. He helped run the family business, had a small business of his own, was a professional DJ and played bass in various bands. During this time he even managed to meet the love of his life and get married.
Tony developed a true love of the sea during his time in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War which brought him to his Charleston home. Over the past 27 years, Tony taught safe boating classes to novice boaters and held over ten positions in boating originations including Commander of the Charleston Power Squadron, Commodore of the Cooper River Yacht Club and Commodore of the Charleston Yacht Club.
The family greatly appreciates all of the care, kindness and friendship that Tony received from his doctors and Roper St. Francis Hospital, Roper BMT Unit and the Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates. Thank you for five more years with Tony.
In addition to his wife of 33 years, Boo, he is survived by three brothers: Lawrence Ward of Cadet, MO, Christopher (Jojo) Ward of Potsi, MO, Robert (Eileen) Ward of Osage Beach, MO; three sisters, Donna (Andrew) Larimore of Potsi, MO, Lucy Ward of Cadet, MO, and Ann Cain (Toby Kitts) of Cumming, GA; sister-in-law, Linda Ward of Potsi, MO. He was predeceased by his brother, Ray.
Tony's greatest gifts were friendship, laughter, generosity and the ability to entertain friends and family with music, laughter and dare we say, rum. To all of the boaters...raise a glass, smile, tell stories and laugh. To all others, apologies you were not privileged to meet such a beautiful soul.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Charleston Leukemia Cup Regatta, 941 Houston Northcutt Boulevard, Suite 203, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
