Anthony "Tin" Toomer
DuPre
Apr 9, 1939 — May 3, 2026
Anthony “Tin” Toomer DuPre, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the age of 87. Born on April 9, 1939 in Charleston, SC, Anthony was the son of the late Andrew Hibben DuPre and late Katherine Swinton Morrison DuPre. He was raised in McClellanville, where his father served as Director of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.
A proud graduate of Clemson University in 1962, Tin earned his degree in civil engineering, which laid the foundation for his career. He married Patricia Roehl immediately after college and then served in the U.S. Air Force for three years as an engineer stationed in Ohio, California, and Greenland. After his military service, he went to work for his father at Cape Romain Contractors, a heavy civil marine construction company. Following his father’s death in 1979, Tin then became President of Cape Romain, where he applied his expertise and dedication to his craft. Cape Romain still thrives today, 80 years after its founding, due in large part to his contributions and strong work ethic; it is operated today by his sons and grandsons, which represent third and fourth generation ownership. His professional achievements were paralleled by his deep commitment to his faith and love of Jesus Christ. He was an active and devoted member of St. Andrew’s Church, contributing faithfully to various ministries and fellowship. Tin was a mentor, friend and prayer companion to many. Despite a tragic accident in 1985, which left his lower body paralyzed, he was known for his independence and his faith. Adversity was conquered by faith. Tin DuPre demonstrated this over and over again throughout his life.
Tin loved the outdoors, the natural world, and adventure. Late in life, he and his wife Patty spent nearly a decade travelling in his Ford pickup and travel trailer. They travelled to Novia Scotia, Canada, Mexico, and all across the continental United States. He was instrumental in preserving his family farm, Palmetto Plantation, by working with his siblings and the Nature Conservancy, placing the property into a conservation easement. His efforts earned him a Lifetime Membership into The Nature Conservancy. The property is still owned by the DuPre family, and is protected in perpetuity because of his efforts.
Tin was devoted to his family. He is survived by his children; his daughter Ann Karst (Mark), and his sons Anthony “Sonny” T. DuPre Jr. (Shawn) and Andrew Gibbs DuPre (Allen). He was a proud grandfather to Jordan, Marshall, John, Gervais, Hamlin, Binks and Hugh, and his legacy continues with his great-grandchildren Eliza, Carter, Charlotte, Hudson, Evelyn, and Cecilia. He also leaves behind two brothers, John DuPre and Bill DuPre, and two sisters, Kay Boggs and Alice Jordan.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Andrew, and his wife, Patricia Roehl DuPre.
The family will honor Tin’s memory with a funeral service on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, located at 440 Whilden Street in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Internment and reception will follow at the DuPre Family Cemetery and home on Palmetto Plantation, McClellanville, SC.
