Annie Caroline Butt Reid Quattlebaum

Annie Caroline Butt Reid Quattlebaum, wife of Dr. Thomas Godfrey Quattlebaum, died Saturday, November 30, 2024. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Annie Caroline was born March 28, 1945, in Washington, Beaufort County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Alfred Watson Butt and Rachel Pearson Butt.

Annie Caroline grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from Ashley Hall School. While at Columbia University in New York City, she worked for anthropologist Margaret Mead at the American Museum of Natural History. After traveling and working in Boston and Paris, Annie Caroline came back to Charleston and started a career as a commercial photographer.

In 1979, in Charleston, Annie Caroline married G. Marion Reid, whom she met on a fox hunt. When he retired as Director of the Charleston Airport, they set out to develop his horse farm, Stono River Stable. Annie Caroline loved horses, and they built an award-winning home there and ran a large riding school which included academic programs for the College of Charleston, recognized horse trials, summer camps, and an occasional racehorse. For 30 years, there was never a dull moment in this busy life working with children, the land, and horses.

Her family also continued to spend time in eastern North Carolina at her father’s family home, “Garrison Point,” on the Pamlico River where her family has deep colonial roots. When Marion died in 2009, Annie Caroline moved back into the city of Charleston.

Memberships she enjoyed included The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of South Carolina, The Junior League of Charleston, The Charleston Cotillion, the Old Town Supper Club, and a book club she helped found in 1986.

In 2016 Annie Caroline reconnected with Dr. Thomas G. Quattlebaum, a widower, who had been her children’s pediatrician and family friend. Her children adored Tom, and eventually, in 2018 Tom and Annie Caroline were married at her childhood Episcopal church, Old Saint Andrews.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; a daughter, Rachel Stanyarne Reid; a son, G. Marion Reid IV (Karen); stepdaughters: Dr. Elisabeth Reid Gelber (Peter) and Jennifer Reid Walt; and by grandchildren: Elizabeth Hayes Reid (“Elle”), George Marion Reid V, Alfred Watson Reid-Dapkus, Elisabeth Walt Reynolds (Callum), and Margaret Gelber Harbach (Aaron). She is also survived by nephew, William Stevens Reid (Mandy); cousins: Susan Perry Davis (Nat), Ann Pate Green (Jeff), Jennifer Butt Ferrell, Margaret Butt-Koger, Mary Louise Butt, William C. Butt, Jr.; and by Tom’s children: Anne Quattlebaum, Mary Q. DeHaas, Dr. Elizabeth Q.
