Anne Smolinski was born Annelise Paula Rauch in Dayton, Ohio on February 10, 1932 to parents Konrad Rauch and Elisabeth (Knott) who immigrated from Germany after World War I.

Anne and her family exemplified the American dream, with focus on faith, family, education, and hard work for her and her siblings, Conrad, Irmi, and Joe. Anne studied Art Education at the Dayton Art Institute and received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton. She taught high school art and went on to earn a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design, with a major in Pottery and minor in Printmaking. Anne spent summers studying painting at the University of Mexico, New Mexico, and Minnesota.

Anne married her husband George in 1963, and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage together before George passed away in 2017. They shared a love for gourmet food, opera, and classical music. Anne was a devoted wife and mother to two children, Tom and Paula.

Anne was a member of the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors and the Traveling Brushes. While in Dayton, she exhibited and sold numerous works, including a watercolor painting of the Wright Brothers Museum to the Department of the Interior. Anne and George relocated to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 2003 to live with their daughter Paula and her family. While in Charleston, Anne continued to pursue her art, focusing on watercolors as a member of the Mt. Pleasant Artists Guild. Anne was a lifelong artist and teacher into her 90s, sharing her love of art with family and friends through teaching and gifting her paintings and pottery.

Anne’s Catholic faith was the guiding light in her life, and she regularly attended the Saturday evening Mass at Christ Our King-Stella Maris church in Mt. Pleasant. Ann was beloved by family and friends, known as “Annie”, “Iss”, and “Oma” in her later years to her grandchildren and close friends.

Anne is survived by son Tom Smolinski and granddaughter Lauren Smolinski and by daughter Paula (Smolinski) Walmet, husband Eric Walmet and grandchildren Rachel and Luke Walmet. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Donate - SVDP USA

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 14, 2026 at Christ Our King, 1149 Russell Dr., Mount Pleasant, SC at 10:30 am, followed by interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Huguenin Ave, Charleston, SC.
