Anne Dosher Read, née Anne Pleasants Dosher, widow of Thomas Lee Read, Sr., passed away August 6, 2017 surrounded by family. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017 in Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Saint James Churchyard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Born on May 18, 1932 in Natchez, Mississippi, the daughter of Dr. William Sterling Dosher and Anne Eliza Pleasants Dosher, she was raised in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, NC. While attending Mary Baldwin College, she met her husband, Tom, through their mutual friend and cousin, the late Alban E. Brooke, and were married in Wilmington, NC in 1952. After a brief tour in the Army in Newfoundland, they settled down to raise their family in Charleston, SC.Anne was most dedicated to and proud of being a wife and mother and grandmother. After raising their four children in their home on James Island, she and Tom transformed it into a beautiful gathering place for the families of their children for many meals, special occasions, and swimming in the creek.
A faithful Episcopalian, Anne served the church in numerous capacities, including altar and flower guilds, attending diocesan conventions local and national, and teaching needlepoint to parishioners making kneelers. She completed Education for Ministry, was ordained as a Deacon, and was a member of the Order of the Companions. She volunteered with hospice.
Accomplished in many things, her other activities included extensive theological reading, supper club, garden club, Rotary Auxiliary, and bridge. She loved doing needlework of all kinds, creating many beautiful pieces which are being passed down the generations. In the 1970s she opened a needlework shop called the Golden Needle, Inc., in the Rainbow Market downtown. An excellent cook, she loved to entertain in their home of 50 years. She corresponded regularly by handwritten letters to her mother, family, and friends, and kept an extensive collection of thank you notes from friends and acquaintances who had been to parties at her home. She and her husband loved to travel.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Lee Read, Sr., and her brother, William Sterling Dosher, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Anne Pleasants Read (Charles Blankin) and Helen Read Bertrand; her sons Thomas Lee Read, Jr. (Sheila) and William Sterling Dosher Read (Jane); 9 grandchildren Eliza Cone Hough (Jamie), Mary Louise Cone, Thomas Lee Read III (Tara), Rebecca Katherine Read, Eleanor Grace Bertrand, Anne Elizabeth Bertrand, William Heyward Read (Rebecca), Alexander Barnwell Read, Virginia Dosher Read; one great grandson Hutson Thomas Read; and her first cousin Captain Sidney Edwin Veazey, USN (Ret.).
