Anne Scannelly Able Pooser

February 20, 1919 — September 30, 2013

Anne Scannelly Able Pooser, 94, of Hanahan, South Carolina, widow of Stroman Gilreath Pooser, died Monday, September 30, 2013. Her Funeral Service will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013, at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Pkwy at 2:00 pm. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel.

Anne was born February 20, 1919 in Birmingham, Alabama, daughter of Joe Scannelly and Nettie McCauley Scannelly. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston and also at Deer Park Baptist Church of North Charleston. She taught Sunday School for many years. In 1942, Anne graduated from Howard College (which later became Samford University), where she earned some of her tuition by editing the college newspaper. She was an editor and writer for the Christian Index in Atlanta, then state editor of the Birmingham Post-Herald in Alabama. She was one of the first women to work on the copy desk of a major newspaper, The Birmingham News. She was co-owner and operator of the Saluda County Sentinel at one time. From 1950-53, she worked as a writer and editor at the then Charleston News and Courier. Anne was a writer and editor for the Southeast Division Bureau of Yards and Docks, 1957-64. She went on to teach at First Baptist Church Day School, Holly Hill High School, Cross High School and loved and kept in touch with some of her students for many years. She and her husband, Gil, ran a farm in Ridgeville, enjoyed art, beauty and nature, loved their family and friends, served in their church and practiced faithfully their Christianity all their lives.

Mrs. Pooser is survived by her daughter, Camber Able Sammons of Charleston, SC; grandsons, Thomas Able Fulmer and wife, Christina Hutchinson Fulmer of Goose Creek, SC, and Robert Turner Fulmer and fiancée, Sophie Flar Manning of Charleston, SC; and one great-granddaughter, Amber Claire Fulmer. Mrs. Pooser was predeceased by a daughter, Claire Gilreath Pooser.
