Anne Bailey Middleton

September 30, 1941 — June 10, 2016

Anne Bailey Middleton, 74, of Charleston, SC, wife of Henry Woodward Middleton, entered into eternal rest Friday, June 10, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016, in St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street, at 2:00 p.m. Interment, churchyard. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.

Anne was born September 30, 1941 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Frank Herndon Bailey and Anne Johnston Bailey. She was a Bachelor of Arts graduate of the University of North Carolina and a member of St. Michael's Church.

Anne is survived by her husband Woody of 50 years; daughter, Anne Johnston Middleton of Charleston, SC; two sons: H. Woodward Middleton, Jr. (Leslie) of Jupiter, FL and Frank Bailey Middleton (Marilia) of Mill Valley, CA; and seven grandchildren: Bailey, Blake, Woody, Clay, John, Julia and Sophia.

Anne attended Charleston Day School and Ashley Hall. She went on to Mount Vernon Junior College, followed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received her Bachelor of Arts in Art History. After marrying Woody, they moved to Charlotte to begin a new life together and be a part of a legacy in the Queen City. She was involved in many charitable organizations. Among the many, she was a member of the Junior League in Charlotte, a sustaining member of the Charleston Junior League and a member of The Charleston Library Society. She was also head of Christ Church Alter Guild, a participant in the Education for Ministry Program at Christ Church and head of Christ Church Bible Study. She was a member of Mille Fleurs Garden Club in Charlotte, was a Past President of the Charlotte Debutant Club, and developed the docent tour material for the Mint Museum, which became the foundation for public school museum tours.

Anne was beautiful in so many ways, but it was the energy and beauty within that captivated so many. She loved the social side of life where she was often found radiating at the center of a crowd, a true catalyst of cheer with a quit wit and a gift to connect with others. She used her charisma to build relationships that transcended friendship through a remarkable loyalty she was known for.

She professed throughout her life to have never really left her native home of Charleston and considered the low country marsh as the ultimate place of peace and beauty. The only thing that usurped her love of Charleston was the loving community of friends and sense of home that she created in Charlotte.

Anne was generous in so many ways. So much of her time, love and energy went into the church which was one of her most treasured investments. Her giving came from her heart and an interest in connecting with others that stemmed from her caring nature. It was always amazing to see how much time she put into finding the perfect gift that would make even a teenager smile. Anne loved her family unconditionally. She held high expectations and taught them all how to reach for the moon.

Memorials may be made to St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
