Anne Hellams Hollowell was born Helen Anne Hellams in Columbia, SC, to Robert Bruce and Helen Seyle Hellams on July 1, 1921. She graduated from Lander University of Greenwood, SC, in 1941 and went on to an amazing 65-year career in teaching. She focused on teaching English, enabling many students to overcome learning disabilities and challenges such as Dyslexia. She married Isaiah Tucker Irvin V in 1942 at the advent of World War II, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Their only son was through that marriage. Tucker Irvin enlisted in the Army and fought in the European Theater, being part of the landing on Normandy Beach. Anne subsequently married Dr. Joseph G. Hollowell, Jr. on August 11, 1955. She had 5 children through that marriage. Anne was a voracious reader, and often said, “Never spoil a story for lack of facts!” She was an accomplished pianist, loved horse-back riding, and enjoyed all forms of theater. As a member of the Episcopal Church attending St. Andrew’s Church in Mt. Pleasant and St. Phillip’s Church in Charleston, Anne enjoyed a deep and abiding relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is with him now.
Anne is survived by her brother, Robert Hellams, Jr., her cousin Angie Mills of Chicago, her 6 children, Isaiah Tucker Irvin VI, Joseph G. Hollowell III, Kyra Hollowell Morris, Susie Summers Pugliese, Barbara Hollowell Wagner, and Helen Edith Hollowell, along with her Grandchildren J.G. Hollowell IV, James Tucker Morris, Robert Joseph Morris, Seyle Gable Morris, Devin Champagne, Jefferson Wagner, Samuel Menkus, and Walker Menkus.
