Anne Clark Gildea, 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Michael Mayo Gildea, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
Mrs. Gildea was born June 14, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of Charles W. Montgomery and Alice Hawes Haynes. Her beloved adopted father was John Weasner Clark. She was raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended Sweet Briar College, and was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Virginia. After she retired as teacher and Executive Director of St. Andrews Day School, she owned Le Grand Tour, a bicycle shop. In 1988, she opened The Dressing Room with her daughter, Molly. Anne served on the Board of Directors of The Footlight Players and volunteered with several other area theatre companies.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Tabb "Molly" Gildea (Matt Shiers) Spence of Charleston and Lucenia Mayo "Lucy" Gildea (Lenny) Spears of James Island; her son, Matthew Fontaine Maury (Debra) Gildea of Asheville, NC; a brother, John Starling Clark of Charlotte, NC; grandsons, Matthew Lee Spence, William Price Spears, Benjamin Stewart Spears and Michael Wyatt Gildea; varied nieces and nephews and her special companion, Jack R. Marahrens.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, with a memorial service at 7:00 p.m.
The family would especially like to thank Anne's team from Roper Hospice for their loving care and support through this difficult time.
