Anne Sinkler Le Clercq

Anne "Angie" Sinkler Whaley Le Clercq, 72, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Frederic S. Le Clercq died Thursday, June 19, 2014. Her funeral service will be Monday, June 23, 2014, in St. Philip's Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment, churchyard. The family will receive friends at the Carolina Yacht Club following service.

Angie was born January 14, 1942 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Ben Scott Whaley and Emily Fishburne Whaley. She was a graduate of Charleston Day School, Ashley Hall, attended Sweet Briar, and graduated cum laude from Duke University. She received a masters in Library Sciences from Emory University, and a law degree with honors from the University of Tennessee College of Law. She was a Professor Emeritus and Head Librarian for The Daniel Library at The Citadel, and former head of the Undergraduate Library at the University of Tennessee.

Angie had deep roots in the Lowcountry. She was the granddaughter of William James Whaley, a Civil War veteran from Edisto Island, and Martha Elizabeth Bailey, of Rockville, as well as the granddaughter of Kershaw Fishburne, M.D., and Anne Sinkler Fishburne of Pinopolis.

Angie was the author of four books published by the University of South Carolina Press, and a frequent garden and travel columnist of the Charleston Mercury.

She is survived by her husband, Frederic S. Le Clercq of Charleston, three sons: Ted Le Clercq (Courtney) of New Orleans, LA, Ben W. Le Clercq (Allston) of Mt. Pleasant, W. Kershaw F. Le Clercq (Anne) of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren: Douglas, Price, Susan Anne, Will, Peter, and Ned; two sisters: Emily W. Whipple of Charleston, and Marty W. Cornwell (Charles) of Charleston, and her first cousin, Anne B. Helms (Billy) of Charleston.
