Ann Swinton Townsend

October 22, 1943 — February 28, 2021

Ann Swinton Townsend, 77, of Wadmalaw Island, SC, died peacefully at home on Sunday, February 28, 2021, surrounded by her family. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Johns Island Presbyterian Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 4, 2021, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc.,West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, SC 29414. Due to Covid-19 protocol, masks are required and social distancing will be observed.

Ann was born October 22, 1943 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of the late James Swinton Townsend II and Eugenia Moore Hills Townsend. Ann attended Wadmalaw Island Grade School, graduated from Ashley Hall School for Girls, and received her B.A. degree from Erskine College. She was a member of Rockville Presbyterian Church. Ann's work as an educator at the Charleston Museum and her employment at the South Carolina Coastal Council allowed her to fulfill her lifetime calling of caring for animals and protecting the environment. She rescued innumerable animals over her lifetime and her service on the Board of Directors of the John Ancrum SPCA gave her the platform she needed to educate the public on having their pets spayed or neutered.

She is survived by her sisters, Jean Hills Townsend, and Constance Legare Townsend Brady (John); her nephews, James Townsend Wells (Laval); John Michael Brady, Jr., and her niece, Eugenia Townsend "Nina" Brady, her dedicated caregiver, as well as her friend and personal chef, John Thomas (Tommy) Tucker.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Lutheran Hospice and for the caregivers who allowed Ann to remain in her home as she wished: Nola Jackson (Nola's compassion and gentle care gave comfort not only to Ann, but to her family), Renee Rodriguez, Linda Fasig and Sandra Halsey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rockville Presbyterian Church, 2479 Sea Island Yacht Club Road, Wadmalaw Island, SC 29487 or to the animal protection organization of one's choice.

ALZHEIMER'S POEM

Do not ask me to remember,
Do not try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you're with me,
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
I'm confused beyond your concept.
I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you.
To be with me at all cost.
Do not lose your patience with me.
Do not scold or curse my cry.
I can't help the way I'm acting,
Can't be different through I try.
Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don't fail to stand beside me,
Love me tile my life is done.
