Ann Willis Cullum

February 19, 1938 — October 5, 2018

Ann Willis Cullum, of Charleston, SC, wife of Furman R. Cullum, entered into eternal rest on October 5, 2018. Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 8, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, SC.

She was born on February 19, 1938, in Greenwood, SC to Jerald and Mildred Willis, Ann graduated from Greenwood High School, attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC and graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. After her graduation, she and Furman were married and she found a job teaching at Walhalla High School while Furman completed his last year in Mechanical Engineering at Clemson. Ann's father was a Clemson graduate, and her blood has always run orange. Even though Ann's degree was in history, she was always very good in algebra and that is what she taught at Walhalla. After Furman's graduation and his receipt of a commission in the U.S. Army, they moved to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for two years. It was there her oldest son Furman R. Cullum, III, was born.

After that the couple returned to Greenwood where her middle son Thomas Wells Cullum was born. Two years later they moved to Greenville where her youngest son Richard Christopher Cullum was born. In two more years the family moved to Charleston which has been their home for over 50 years.

While the boys attended public school in West Ashley, Ann frequently was a substitute teacher at the schools they attended. Later she worked in the family business where she served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Ann was active in community activities and enjoyed cooking, Clemson football and travel, but always her family came first. She arranged her work schedule to be available when the boys were out of school.

In 1994 Ann was stricken with Encephalitis which left her with no short-term memory, retaining her long-term memory. As time passed, she required more and more day to day supervision. In 2010 she fell and fractured a hip which required a stay in rehab. Returning home, she required constant care until finally she had to move to a nursing home, and was in and out of Roper-St. Francis Hospital several times.

The family wants to thank the staff at the hospital and NHC Healthcare, 2230 Ashley Crossing Drive for their care.

Ann is predeceased by her parents and one younger brother, William (Bill) Willis. She is survived by her husband, Furman, her sons, Rudy (Robbin) Cullum, Tom Cullum, Chris (Tiffney) Cullum and daughter-in-law, Angie Kaho, and her six grandchildren and brother Thomas (Tom) Willis (Linda).

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.
