Amy Underwood Trowell, widow of William Wallace Trowell and formerly of Edisto Beach, S.C., died in St. Louis, Mo. on Sunday, March 8, 2015. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2015 in Trinity Episcopal Church, 1589 Highway 174, Edisto Island, S.C. at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following the ceremony. Trowell was born near Bainbridge, Ga., on September 19, 1915. She graduated with honors from Agnes Scott College in 1935 and married Wallace Trowell that summer. This marriage lasted sixty-two years. She later received her Master's degree in Library Science from Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked in libraries in Cleveland and New Orleans. After her husband's retirement, she and Wallace moved to Edisto Beach, S.C. She served as librarian of the Edisto Island branch of the Charleston County Library system for twenty-five years.She was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she was the organist for a number of years. She also served in various offices in the Episcopal Churchwomen. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and the American Library Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Trowell Hanselman (James E. II); two sons-in-law: Thomas C. Kearns and William H. Leslie; a sister-in -law, Jacqueline Underwood; five grandchildren: James E. Hanselman III (Teresa), John Trowell Hanselman, Elizabeth Leslie Bagley (Charles E.), William T. Leslie (Katherine), and Samuel J. Leslie (Melissa); and seven great-grandchildren,: Cole Bagley, Katherine and James Hanselman IV, Isabella and Walker Leslie, and Jackson and Anna Grace Leslie, and a niece, Lila Gault Arp and several nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her daughter, Nancy Trowell Kearns; her sister, Emily Underwood Gault; and her brother, William C. Underwood, Jr.
