Amy Katherine "Kay" Sparks, 79, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, widow of Harold Ray Sparks, Sr. died Thursday, June 23, 2016. Her memorial service will be held Friday, July 1, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, 681 McCants Drive at 4:00 p.m. Private burial will be in Nashville, Tennessee on August 6, 2016. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Kay was born March 28, 1937, daughter of the late William H. Burroughs and the late Amy Sexton Burroughs. She grew up in Old Hickory, Tennessee. In 1958, Kay graduated from the University of Tennessee and began her teaching career. She taught preschool and elementary school in Tennessee and South Carolina for over 35 years and was principal at First Baptist Church School of Mount Pleasant and at Chesterbrook Academy in Mount Pleasant. Kay retired from Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Learning Center in 2011. She was a devoted teacher and loved her family dearly. Her sweet Southern accent, her laugh, and her famous brownies will be missed.
She is survived by her children, Katherine Sparks and Harold "Hal" Sparks, Jr., and his wife Dawn; granddaughter, Hailey, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; two brothers, William H. Burroughs, Jr., and James E. Burroughs; nieces and nephews, Betty Burroughs Ratteree, James S. Burroughs, Sr., Amy Burroughs Yates, Brandy Burroughs Langston, and Nathan P. Haskins; and many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Harold, of nearly 27 years, she was predeceased by her nephew, Robert W. Burroughs.
