Alyce Joye Novella Biggerstaff Smith, 92, passed away on July 22, 2026, in Summerville, South Carolina.
Born on August 25, 1933, in Beaufort County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Robert Houston Biggerstaff, Sr. and Susie Mabel Davis Biggerstaff. She spent her formative years in Allendale and Fairfax, South Carolina, and graduated from Fairfax High School. Following graduation, she attended the Baptist School of Nursing in Columbia, South Carolina, where she met the love of her life, Marion C. Smith. They were married on June 6, 1955, and made their home in Winnsboro, South Carolina, where they lovingly raised their family.
Alyce devoted her life to her family and to caring for others. She helped to open Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Winnsboro where she was a nurse for more than 40 years. Her compassion, strength, and unwavering love were evident in everything she did. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.
She is survived by her three daughters: Susan Smith Raynor of Charleston, South Carolina; Denise Smith McDowell (Ken) of Palm Coast, Florida; and Donna Smith Douglas (Steve) of Lugoff, South Carolina. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Paul Melton of Winnsboro, South Carolina; Courtney Melton Wilkes (Matthew) of Chapin, South Carolina; Caitlin McDowell Mullan of Goose Creek, South Carolina; Adrian Charles McDowell (Victoria) of Deland, Florida; and Christopher David Douglas of Lugoff, South Carolina. She is further survived by seven great-grandchildren: Meredyth, Natalie, Baylor, Avett, Dorothy, Aaliyah, and Silas; and by her sister, Sheralyn Biggerstaff Platts of Charleston, South Carolina.
In addition to her parents, Alyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marion C. Smith; her infant son, Robert Moore Smith; her grandson, Samuel Craig Raynor of Charleston, South Carolina; and her brothers, Robert Houston Biggerstaff, Jr. of Johns Island, South Carolina, and Phillip Wayne Biggerstaff of North Charleston, South Carolina.
The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday, July 30, from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m., in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West West Ashley Chapel, Charleston, South Carolina.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Winnsboro, South Carolina.
