Alvis Arnold Hancock

Alvis Arnold Hancock, 97, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Helen Virginia "Ginny" Hancock entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 31, 2023. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023 in Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Hwy., James Island at 3:00 p.m.  Interment, Bethany Cemetery, 10 Cunnington Ave., Charleston, SC 29405.  Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
 
Alvis was born February 21,1925, in Floyd, Virginia, son of Elmer J. and Effie M. Hancock. His early years were spent in Virginia and Illinois. Al graduated with honors from the University of Maryland in Engineering. He began his career in Maryland and was transferred to Charleston in 1957 to work at the Esso Refinery. He retired after 36 years as Operations Manager for the Charleston Exxon plant. Alvis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Al was very involved with the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Bethany. He was a member of the Charleston Elks Club, the Civitans, and the Rotary Club. After retiring he served as a mentor through SCORE, a nationwide network of volunteers dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground. Al was an avid golfer, and he and Ginny often went on golf outings with their friends. 
 
He is survived by his three daughters: Carliss Prosser (Dr. David), Carol Koon (Kerry) and BJ Smith; six grandchildren: Zachary Parker, Monica Moore (Kenny), Lolly Koon Miller (Anthony), Ginger Litman-Koon ( Kris), Kimberly Koon, Christian Smith (Abbey); six great-grandchildren: Dixie Parker, Kyle Moore (Alison), Drew Moore, Stella Litman-Koon, Virginia Litman-Koon, Warren Miller, Grey Miller; and two great-great-grandchildren: Karson Moore and Kyle Moore, Jr.

“Grandad Al” was a stellar example of loving kindness to people throughout his life by his generosity and self-sacrificing help. He was a truly honorable man.

We will certainly miss him.
