Allan Windsor Wendt

A funeral service to honor the life of Allan Windsor Wendt, Jr. will be held Saturday, June 3rd, at 1:00 PM at the J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. The Reverend Dr. William Christian, III will officiate.
Born May 7th, 1954, in Columbia SC, Allan passed away on Wednesday, May 24th. He was the son of Mary Bull Pinckney Wendt of Columbia and the late Allan Windsor Wendt, Sr. He graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia, SC, and earned a degree in architecture with a minor in sculpture studio art from Clemson University.
After graduation Allan worked as a volunteer with visionary Italian architect Paolo Soleri at his urban laboratory Arcosanti in central Arizona. Allan then moved to Charleston a city he loved for its rich history and architectural heritage and began practicing architecture.
In the Renaissance tradition, he set up a studio practice which focused on the study of Art, Architecture and Music. Allan was a sculptor and a prolific artist producing numerous representational graphite drawings of churches and public buildings. His figure studies have been exhibited at art galleries in Charleston including The Halsey Institute. His more recent abstract drawings are on display at the Drawing Center in New York and have been exhibited at The Corrigan Gallery and Artfields in Lake City, SC. He contributed a series of stunning figure drawings for the published novel The Myth of Death by his good friend Peter Wludyka. Allan was the subject of several paintings by his beloved friend artist Guy Allison of Anderson, South Carolina. In 2013 he participated in a two person show at the Corrigan Gallery with long-time friend, professional colleague and fellow artist Alan Jackson. Allan is represented in Charleston by The Corrigan Gallery.
He was an accomplished composer and classical guitarist. He performed and made recordings of his own compositions as well as those of other composers. Despite his many artistic and professional achievements, the accomplishment he was most proud of was his two sons William and Elias. He enjoyed spending time with them and searching for fossils and shark's teeth at Edisto Beach where he and his family enjoyed summer vacations.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sons William Stephens Wendt and Elias Hayden Pinckney Wendt, both of Charleston, SC; former wife, Judith Stephens of Charleston, SC; sisters, Mary Davie Wendt of Petaluma, CA, Jean (Tom) Jones of White Oak, SC, and Frances (Brian) Burns of Columba, SC; and many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends.
He will be deeply missed by all.
