Alice Gaither Hyatt, 79, of North Charleston, SC, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016. Her memorial service will be held at The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming Street 2pm January 20, 2017. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel.
Alice was born September 1, 1937 in Hyattsville, MD. She is the daughter of the late William Frederick Gaither and the late Marian Frances Fink Gaither. She earned her Bachelor of Science at Frostburg State University in Maryland. In addition to teaching high school English and History, Alice served with numerous community and church organizations. She wrote curricula for Head Start and was the representative for the state of Maryland during the Bicentennial. After she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she focused her efforts on expanding people's understanding of the disease. She represented South Carolina at state and national conferences speaking with members of congress, governors, and media representatives.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Vice (Daniel); sister, Patricia Gaither Biedzynski of MD; and grandsons, Andrew and Josiah Vice. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Harris Hyatt.
