Alice Rainey "Skeet" Moore Brown

Alice Rainey “Skeet” Moore Brown, 96, of Sullivans Island, South Carolina, into eternal rest Saturday, May 20, 2023. Skeet was born on September 28, 1926, to Thomas R. Moore and Willie S. Moore in Clio, SC. She began her nursing career upon graduating from McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing in 1946. With the promise of watermelon, Skeet reluctantly went on a blind date with a handsome Navy veteran, William Lancer “Lance” Brown in 1947; they were married several months later. She spent the next four years as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as Lance obtained his degree from MIT. They moved to Charleston in 1951 where they welcomed their first daughter. They found their forever home on Sullivan’s Island in 1952 and expanded their family of three to six over the next few years with the birth of three more daughters. Skeet volunteered as school nurse at Sullivan’s Island School while her daughters were in grade school, then continued her nursing career with Dr. George Durst (Senior and Junior) and Dr. Bert Pruitt. Upon retirement, Skeet served as a volunteer for over 20 years at East Cooper Regional Medical Center.

Long time members of Sullivan’s Island Baptist Church, Skeet and Lance were both active in teaching Sunday School and participating in services. Through the years she served as a Trustee, Sunbeam Leader, GA Leader, and WMU Director. Skeet continued her love of service at the Mililani Baptist Church in Mililani, Hawaii where Lance and she lived from 1981 through 1984 before returning to Sullivan’s Island. In addition to her church service, Skeet was chair of the East Cooper Christian Women’s Club and active in the Sullivan’s Island Garden Club.

Despite her busy career and full household, Skeet found time to enjoy gardening, cross-stitching, photography, and fishing - just catching them, never eating them.

Skeet is survived by her four daughters, Betsy Brown Schroer (John) of Mt. Pleasant, Patty Brown and Barbara Brown of Summerville, and Gayle Brown Morris (Scott) of West Union, SC. She is also survived by granddaughter, Katie Schroer Robinson (Matt), and three grandsons, Billy Schroer of Mt Pleasant, Jeffrey Morris (Melanie) of Appleton, WI, and Benjamin Morris (Allison) of Denver, CO. She has six great grandchildren, Liam, Kellan, Jace, Reagan, Amelia, and Owen, and two bonus great granddaughters by marriage Emma and Julianna (Matthew). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews - and her faithful dog, Nell.

Skeet will be fondly remembered as a caring mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother, and selfless friend. The family takes great comfort in knowing she has been reunited with the love of her life, humming “To God Be the Glory” as they walk hand in hand in heaven…enjoying some watermelon.

The family would like to thank the staff of Roper St. Francis Hospice, especially Downie and U’Nica for their loving and tender care the last few months.

Flowers will be welcomed, or memorials may be made to Saint Frances Animal Center, 125 North Ridge Street, Georgetown 29440 (www.sfanimals.org) or to Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org).

Her Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 1:00 pm.  Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
