Albert “Al” C. Straub, Jr., of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on October 26, 2026. A memorial service will be held on November 5, 2026, at Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Dr., at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Al was born on October 7, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late son Albert Straub, Sr. and Ellla Leonhardt Straub. He was a graduate of Addington High School in Philadelphia and later graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1968. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy. Following his service, he built a long standing career in optical sales, working for American Optical, Victory Optical, and Silor Optical. He will be remembered as a devoted family man who loved his wife and children deeply, and as someone who truly loved his community.
Beyond his work, Al gave his time and energy to the people and causes around him. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Charleston and volunteered at the South Carolina Aquarium from the time it opened, continuing in that role for the next 20 years. During his years in Minnesota, he served with the National Ski Patrol for more than two decades, reflecting both his love for skiing and his devotion to helping others.
Some of the memories most cherished by his family were made in the everyday gifts he gave them so freely. He coached and refereed his children’s soccer games and taught them how to ski at a young age, creating lasting memories.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Ellen Straub; his son, Steven Straub (Serena); and his daughter, Susan Straub.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Straub
Al’s life was marked by devotion, to his family, to his work, to service, and to his community. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
