Alan Barry Goer

It is with great respect and admiration that we remember Alan Barry Goer, a beloved member of the Charleston community, who passed away at the age of 74. Alan’s journey began on November 4, 1949, at Roper Hospital, where he was welcomed into the world by his parents, Ernest and Miryam Goer.

Alan was a man of intellect and ambition, attending the Gaud School for Boys before completing his secondary education at St. Andrew’s. He later attended Tulane University, where his sharp mind and entrepreneurial spirit were further cultivated. These qualities would define much of his illustrious career. 

Alan spent decades at the helm of Goer Manufacturing, working in Chicago, New York, and Charleston. Alan’s leadership and ingenuity extended beyond his role at Goer, bringing his total career in the industry to over 50 years. His dedication and perseverance left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the businesses he helped shape.

A keen traveler and food enthusiast, Alan was known for his discerning taste in restaurants, which he critiqued across the country and around the globe. His true joy, however, came from his family. His greatest pride and joy were raising his three sons and positively influencing his grandchildren, ensuring that his legacy would continue through the generations.

Outside of his professional and communal achievements, Alan was a man of boundless energy and passion. A lifelong lover of sports, he ran every morning for decades, while also enjoying tennis and bike riding. His athletic talents extended to his youth, where he was a part of the Westwood community and played every sport imaginable.

Alan’s love for the College of Charleston was evident in his unwavering support of the school’s athletics. Whether home or away, he faithfully attended Cougar games and celebrated the university’s growth. His legacy continues in the form of the first-ever basketball scholarship established for the school, a testament to his commitment to fostering young talent.

A devoted co-chair of Charleston Jewish Federation, Alan held his faith and community close to his heart. His commitment to Synagogue Emanu-El, where his parents were founding members, mirrored his dedication to raising his family in those same values. He and his wife proudly watched as their three sons-Jossie, Kenzie, and Haydon-were all bar mitzvahed at the synagogue.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Wendy; his sons, Jossie, Kenzie (Chelsea), and Haydon (Kelly); his grandchildren, Preston and Georgie; his sisters, Stacey and Elissa, and a myriad of other relatives. He leaves behind a close circle of family and friends who will remember his generosity, his wit, and his larger-than-life presence.

A service to honor Alan’s life will be held this Friday, September 13, 2024 at Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue at 4:00 pm, where friends and family will gather to celebrate the impact he made on all who knew him.

Alan Barry Goer will be deeply missed, but his influence, his work, and his love will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
