Alan "Al" Scott Coopersmith, 57, husband of Pamela Shetler Coopersmith of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012. The relatives and friends of Alan "Al" Coopersmith are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Thursday, March 22, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 2:30 pm. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Coopersmith was born on June 8, 1954 in Queens, New York, son of Shirley Thenen Coopersmith and the late Sheldon Coopersmith. He was the owner of Alan Coopersmith Wallpaper. He was a member of the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers. In April 2004, Al received the Samuel Gaillard Stoney Conservation Craftsmanship Award from the Historic Charleston Foundation in recognition of the work he had done in the historic buildings, homes, and plantation properties in the Lowcountry and of peninsular Charleston. During the presentation of this award at the Nathaniel Russell House, Al's greatest moment of pride came when the presenter said, "Although he is a New Yorker, we are proud to call him a Charlestonian."
Alan described himself as a craftsman, but those closest to him thought of him as an artist. His wonderful work appears all over the Lowcountry and far away. He traveled to Macau to serve as a consultant in a massive new establishment, and was called on to contribute to the renovation of historic properties both here and elsewhere. Alan brought his special skills to South Carolina—as well as Maine, and Florida. For many, he was as a career teacher of teachers – one of us. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a hearty laugh but never at a questionable story. He had a sense of fairness when dealing with his family, his colleagues, friends, and customers. Al had a great ability to "take charge" and lead, but not as a "Boss" He was a teacher for his helpers, his son, and for his grandchildren. He was not just a "fair weather" friend and his ability to analyze a situation and design an appropriate solution was uncanny. He was not afraid to try something new, and as an artist was very creative. His sense of what was "just right" in many situations was inspired.
He is survived his wife, Pam Coopersmith of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son, Jesse Coopersmith of Mt. Pleasant; his mother, Shirley Coopersmith of Sunrise, FL; one sister, Meryl Kalensky of New York; two grandchildren, Anna and Lucas Coopersmith of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
