Agnes B. Kleckley, 97, of Charleston, SC, widow of James Wyman Kleckley entered into eternal rest Monday, September 21, 2015. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel at 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Agnes was born August 16, 1918 in Easley, SC, daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison Bowen and Ethel Baldwin Bowen. She attended Furman University and the Medical University of South Carolina where she received her nursing degree. Agnes' nursing career spanned a number of years and included working as a registered nurse supervisor at Roper Hospital and at Riverside Convalescent Center, and later as a private duty nurse. She volunteered with the American Heart Association and the Red Cross during her nursing career.
Agnes was particularly proud of her service as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps where as a member of the 24th Evacuation Hospital she was in charge of the first shock ward on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion of World War II. Her military career took her from Normandy Beach through France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. She received the Bronze Star for her efforts in developing an aggressive method of delivering plasma to wounded military personnel during the campaign. Her work on better plasma delivery system was credited with saving many additional lives.She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and was very active in the Faith Circle at Grace United Methodist Church. She held many leadership positions throughout her life. Agnes loved gardening, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family at the lake.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa K. Rogers (John) and son, James Wyman Kleckley, Jr., as well as grandchildren, James Steven Rogers (Laura), Benjamin Allen Rogers (Tiffany), and John Shuman Rogers, III (Sally), two great-grandchildren, Ian Rogers and Kathryn Rogers, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Ethel Baldwin Bowen and Benjamin Harrison Bowen as well as siblings, Troy Bowen, Carnis Bowen Davis, and Lewis Bowen, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Bennett Kleckley.
