Ada Faustina Cummings Mahaffey

Ada Faustina Cummings Mahaffey has gone to be with her Lord and Savior on June 20, 2022. She was the beloved daughter of James Gordon and Edna Ulmer Cummings and the middle child of three children. She was born in Savannah, Georgia on January 18, 1932. Faustina was raised in Summerville, South Carolina and graduated from Summerville High School. She graduated from School of Nursing of Medical University of South Carolina in 1952. While a nursing student at MUSC she met the love of her life, Dr. John E. Mahaffey whom she was married to for 60 years.

Faustina was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Newell Cummings of Charleston. She is survived by a sister Lottie C. Hudgens (Roy) of Florence, children Kathie Mahaffey Planton (Phil) of Charleston, SC, Dr. James M. Mahaffey (Kathryn) of Surfside Beach, John Steven Mahaffey, Charleston, and Thomas Patrick Mahaffey (Edye), Roswell, GA, grandchildren, Jonathan (Leesa), Ryan (Ashley), Drew, Katherine (Ron), Michael (Leigh), Anne (Harry), Mary Elaine, Rebecca (Mike), Sarah Margaret (Ryan), Richard (Mary Ruth), Jameson, John Carlisle, Harris, Elliot, and Maxwell, and 10 great grandchildren.

She was a registered nurse at Pinehaven Sanitorium. She was a member of the Medical Wives Auxiliary for many years. She served on the Board as treasurer and new member committee.

Faustina was an active and devoted member of Ashley River Baptist Church for over 50 years, and a Sunday School teacher for 2nd grade children and special needs children. She served on multiple committees including the hospitality committee, vacation bible school, children's music camp, and was a member of the adult choir.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother and great grandmother. She took her church responsibilities seriously, and enjoyed bridge, bargain shopping and her "Summerville" girlfriends.

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers from the Village of Summerville and Agape Hospice House, Summerville.

Family and friends are invited for visitation with family Wednesday, June 22, 2:00 - 3:00 pm, funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm, Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407. Burial at Live Oak Memorial Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Faustina Mahaffey can be made to Ashley River Baptist Church.
