Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of October 14, 2010, Abner H. Levkoff, M.D., husband of Alice Fink Levkoff. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Abner H. Levkoff are invited to attend his funeral service, Sunday, October 17, 2010 at two o'clock at the graveside in Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue. The family will receive visitors at home.
Dr. Levkoff was born December 2, 1924 in Augusta, GA, the son of Shier Levkoff and Rebecca Rubin Levkoff. Dr. Levkoff received his undergraduate education at the College of Charleston and the University of Michigan and his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1947. Post graduate training in Pediatrics was completed at Children's Hospital of Buffalo, NY, Babies Hospital in New York City and the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the Korean War with the rank of Captain in the US Medical Corp at the Army Medical Research Laboratory. After pediatric practice in South Bend, Indiana and the development of two clinical laboratories he returned in 1968 to his home, Charleston, to develop care for the low birth weight premature infant. This was a newly emerging specialty in pediatric care. Dr. Levkoff established the first neonatal high risk nursery in SC and developed statewide outreach programs for nurses and general practioners in the care of low birth weight and premature newborns. The neonatal high risk nursery at the Medical University of South Carolina was named in his honor in 1993. Dr.Levkoff received the Medical University of South Carolina Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 1997, the inaugural year of this honor. While professor emeritus, Dr. Levkoff continued to teach and lecture on basic science to interns and residents. He enjoyed music, sailing and gardening and participated in the Master Gardener program. Dr. Levkoff was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He was a member of Beth Elohim Congregation.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years of Charleston, SC; three daughters: Amy L. Hudnall and her husband Dr. David Hudnall of Woodbridge, CT, Ann L. Reynolds and her husband Kirk Reynolds of Tampa, FL and Alison L. Taylor and her husband Bradley Taylor of Saratoga Springs, NY; one sister: Doris L. Meddin of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Katie and Molly Hudnall, Hannah Reynolds, Will and Ben Taylor. He is predeceased by his sister, Estelle L. Poliakoff.
